Getting AI and Technology Right in Education Ventures

April 19, 2018, 2:00 p.m. - 2:45 p.m.
The Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center

Recent advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) have rapidly changed the landscape for new startups and research in fields like computer vision, augmented reality, and natural language processing. Many of those technologies seem like they should be able to help close the broad and long-standing gaps in America's student achievement. In practice, we've seen very few success stories and a long list of tech companies that have failed to break into the sector.

This session, part of the Invent Penn State Venture & IP Conference, explores emerging trends and challenges in public education, the opportunities and limitations of AI technologies, and best practices for entrepreneurs hoping to make an impact for students and teachers.

  • Kyle Bowen, Director of Education Technology Services, Penn State
  • Tim Dutta, Co-Founder and CEO, Verificient Technologies, Inc.
  • Carl Marrelli, Director of Product Management and Student Success, Blackboard
  • Conrad Tucker, Associate Professor in the School of Engineering Design, Technology, and Professional Programs, Penn State

  • Lawrence C. Ragan, Principal Community Aggregator, Penn State EdTech Network
